Vic Dooms (1912 - 1994)

Like Albijn Van den Abeele, Victor Dooms was one of the few autochthon artists in Sint-Martens-Latem. At his birth in 1912, the village already had a place on the artistic map of Belgium. The first (symbolist) group and the second (impressionistic) group had already largely vanished from the village. In the interwar period, Maurice Sys, an old resident of Latem, was a regular guest of the Dooms family. The young Vic Dooms accompanied him several times on his painting trips. Between 1932 and 1939, he followed lessons at the Portaels School in Vilvoorde, but just before the war, he settled again in Sint-Martens-Latem. Vic Dooms kept to the sidelines of the art scene. He saw what was happening from a distance, but did not actively participate himself. Dooms did not exhibit often. He exhibited in individual exhibitions only a few times. Only in 1993, a year before his death, did the Toreken cultural centre in Ghent organise a large-scale retrospective.
